Many business schools use GMAT scores as an admission criteria for various graduate management programs, including: MBA, Master of Finance, and Master of Accountancy.

The GMAT Problem Solving questions in the Quantitative section are the classic multiple choice math questions expected on a standardized test. In geometry, test takers should know the total angles in a triangle; how to find the area and perimeter of squares, rectangles and triangles; how to find the area, circumference, radius and diameter of a circle; and a few other basic geometric equations like how to calculate the slope of a line.

In terms of arithmetic, test takers should be prepared to use fractions, decimals and positive and negative integers, and to be able to find averages and percentages.

Speed is crucial to have a shot at a top 10% GMAT math score, but to a generation of test-takers more familiar with Palm Pilots than paper and pencil, the no-calculator clause is a time killer. Look at a sample question: In the question above, do you really want to divide anything by 397,264? Let's approximate 400,000 and quickly restate the question: 5,000,000,000/400,000=? If you're avoiding calculations like we showed you above, you'll be using your scratch paper almost exclusively to set up problems in this way.

Above all, learn to avoid doing math the "traditional" way. You can spot a successful translation because it will put you only a few seconds away from the solution.

This is your typical math section that involves a math simplification/calculation question.

You'll need to understand number properties -- how do you combine expressions that involve exponents? In geometry and coordinates - you'll need to find the value of certain angles, or the length of certain segments with only the available information given.
